Two-Piece Box is the classic tray and lid combination used for premium products, gifts and keepsakes. This generator draws both pieces on one sheet: the base tray with walls the height you choose, and a lid made 3 mm larger all round so it slides over the tray with a clean fit, with a shallow 25 mm wall of its own. Each piece is a cross-shaped blank with four wall flaps and square corner glue tabs, so there are no separate parts to lose. Enter the inside size of the tray, and both dielines are drawn to match.
This generator draws a two-piece box: a base tray and its matching lid, side by side on one sheet. Enter the tray size once and the lid is made to fit it automatically. Export both dielines free as PDF or SVG.
A two-piece box is made of a shallow tray that holds the product and a separate lid that fits over it, like a shoe box or a chocolate box. It is the standard structure for premium packaging because the lid gives a clean reveal, the double walls feel sturdy, and the two pieces can be printed or covered in different colours.
Each piece starts as a cross-shaped blank. The centre panel is the base, the four flaps fold up into walls, and the square tabs at the corners glue the walls together. This generator draws the tray with the wall height you enter and a lid with a shallow 25 mm wall (or the same height as the tray when the tray wall is under 30 mm), sized 3 mm larger so it clears the tray and its material.
Sizes are the inside of the tray: width x depth x wall height. The lid is drawn 3 mm larger in width and depth so it fits over the tray.
| Size (A × B × H) | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 5.9 × 3.9 × 1.6 in (150 × 100 × 40 mm) | Jewellery, watches and gift cards |
| 7.9 × 5.9 × 2.0 in (200 × 150 × 50 mm) | Apparel, scarves and folded garments |
| 9.8 × 7.1 × 2.4 in (250 × 180 × 60 mm) | Shoe style boxes and retail sets |
| 11.8 × 7.9 × 3.1 in (300 × 200 × 80 mm) | Hampers, keepsakes and presentation sets |
Fit is everything in a two-piece box. The lid clearance here is 3 mm in width and depth, which suits paperboard and thin chipboard. If you cover the pieces with thick paper or fabric, or use very thick board, cut a test pair first and expect to add a millimetre or two to A and B for the lid allowance.
In the exported file, red is the cut line, green dashed is a fold and blue dotted is a perforation. Print at 100 percent scale, score the centre rectangle and the tab roots, and glue the corner tabs to the inside of the side walls so the outside corners stay clean.
How much bigger is the lid than the tray?
The lid centre is drawn 3 mm wider and 3 mm deeper than the tray, which gives a sliding fit for paperboard and thin chipboard once the material thickness is included. Test with your exact board before a batch.
Can I change the lid wall height?
The lid wall is 25 mm, or the same as the tray wall when that is under 30 mm. It is fixed so the lid reads as a lid; the tray wall height is the one you set with H.
Is this two-piece box dieline generator free?
Yes. It is free, with no signup and no download limit. Generate any size and export it as PDF or SVG.
What are the square tabs for?
The square tabs at the corners of the top and bottom wall flaps fold around the corners and glue to the side walls. They are what holds each tray or lid together, so no other parts are needed.
What material gives a rigid box feel?
Printers usually build this shape from thick chipboard, often 1.5 to 3 mm, and cover it with printed paper. The generator handles the shape and fit; choose the board in the material list that matches your stock.
