Gable Box is the classic handled gift and favour box: a rectangular base that rises into a pitched roof, pinched together at the top into a carry handle with a hand slot. This generator draws it with a crash-lock auto bottom, so the base pops open ready glued and the flat box stores in a drawer until the day of the party. The two roof panels fold up and meet at the ridge, the gable ends close the sides, and the handle bands sit together so the box lifts in one hand. Set the size of the base, and the roof, handle and hand slot are drawn for you.
This generator makes a gable box with a carry handle top and a crash-lock auto bottom. Enter the size of the base and it draws the roof panels, gable ends, handle bands and hand slots, ready to export free as PDF and SVG.
A gable box is named after the gable of a house: the two long sides continue upward as roof panels and meet at a ridge, while the two short ends close with triangular gable panels. The roof panels end in handle bands with a slot cut in each, so when the bands are pressed together the slots line up and form one carry handle.
Party and gift sellers use gable boxes for favours, sweets and small gifts because they present well, carry in one hand and need no ribbon or bag. This version stands on a crash-lock auto bottom: the base flaps are glued in advance, so the flat box pops into a locked base when pressed open, then folds flat again for storage.
Sizes are the base of the box (width x depth x wall height). The roof and handle rise above the height you enter, by about half the depth plus the handle band.
| Size (A × B × H) | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 5.9 × 3.9 × 3.9 in (150 × 100 × 100 mm) | Party favours, sweets and small gifts |
| 7.1 × 4.7 × 4.7 in (180 × 120 × 120 mm) | Bakery boxes, cookies and muffins |
| 7.9 × 5.5 × 5.1 in (200 × 140 × 130 mm) | Gift boxes, candles and craft kits |
| 9.8 × 7.1 × 5.9 in (250 × 180 × 150 mm) | Hampers and larger gift sets |
Fold and carry a test box before a batch. The two handle bands must meet flat at the ridge so the slots register; if they sit apart, the base size or the creasing is off. The small glue tabs on the gable ends hold the roof closed, so make sure your printer glues them on the slope shown in the dieline.
In the exported file, red is the cut line, green dashed is a fold and blue dotted is a perforation. Print at 100 percent scale and score every fold, especially the ridge fold at the foot of each handle band and the diagonal scores in the auto bottom, or the box will not pop open square.
What is a gable box used for?
Gable boxes are used for party favours, gifts, sweets and bakery items. The pitched top closes into a carry handle, so the box presents like a gift and lifts in one hand without a separate bag.
How does the handle work?
The two roof panels end in handle bands. When the roof is folded up, the bands meet at the ridge and their slots line up to form a single hand hole. You can also thread ribbon through the slots to keep the box closed.
Is this gable box dieline generator free?
Yes. It is free, with no signup and no download limit. Generate any size and export it as PDF or SVG.
How does the auto bottom work?
The bottom flaps are glued to each other in advance, while the box is flat. Press the box open and the flaps unfold into a locked base that carries the weight. After use the box folds flat again.
Can the box be used for food?
The dieline is only the shape. For direct food contact, print on food grade board from your supplier and use a greaseproof liner or tray inside, as bakeries normally do.
